MPLS SKC: Sessions Summary

MPLS Day 1&2 Session Summary

Session One

You are about to enter teenage times. As a teenager you are not a kid anymore and this time is cheerful, but can also be dark. What does the Bible say about this period? Proverbs say that teenagers can be easily misled and can become fools. So we teenagers need discipline and guidance with a rod and club to drive them, who are like sheep, away from straying off from the Bible and God. The other time when the Bible talk about the shepherds' rod is in Psalm 23, when David says the rod and club relieves us. How can it be relieving us when it is a painful process? Because we are being saved by God.

Session Two

Do you know what is the vision of SKC? The vision is to shape Christian students in Christian values and in faith, knowledge, and responsibility. Responsibility is awareness to act, faith is the base of all things we see and the explanation for all things we do not, and knowledge is one of the goals of education.Visions are given by God. Stephen Tong had the vision to have education and healthcare,  but he did education first because teachers were easier to find and it is easier to set up. Education is not inferior, but he believed healthcare was more important. The vision is the same for all students of SKC, but differs to adapt to the needs and difficulties of different ages. You are mostly around twelve now, and this age is a critical one. The only culture to know that twelve is a critical age is Jewish people. Because, when children are twelve years old they are expected to recite the Torah in front of the rabbi. This is when they become an adult. Jesus when he was twelve went to the temple too. The Jewish, who recognized of the importance of twelve, also received the Torah, and are a very disciplined and smart group - they won 216 nobel prizes. So we need to take importance of the year.

MPLS Day 2 Session Summary

Session One

When listening to the teacher or speaker, you already know how to listen and take notes. However, we also need to reflect. I want to give you some suggestions so when listening you can take in more knowledge. First, we are in a new grade, we need to adapt and have a new learning method according to the condition. We cannot be idle, we must find what is suitable for us now. When we listen, take notes, and also reflect, we understand. So we must listen well, and listen actively which is more useful. We also have to take notes. When taking notes, we should avoid doing verbatim - writing word for word, but sometimes we can write every word if you want to be in more detail, depending on the situation. Highlight important things and you might want to draw diagrams or other drawings which can improve your memory and understanding too. Paraphrase what the speaker says so you know you understand.

Session Two

Now we are living along with AI. This is a brief history of AI: the name Artificial Intelligence was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956. Before that, ideas of human creations that can think already exists - such as Golem from Ancient Jewish culture  and Galatea from Greeks. AI started simple to imitate human abilities like arithmetic or logic, and AI started simpler, things like calculators or chess AI. Next, AI learned to recognize faces, which was very impressive at the time. Then it learned more complex things, and now can even become a chatbot. AI is everywhere - education, entertainment, health, transportation, security, and work. Now let's explore the bright and dark sides of AI. On the positive, it boosts efficiency, allows access to a lot of information, it promotes innovation and personalization. We shouldn't forget the dark side - it threatens many jobs, AI is biased, AI can make a deepfake which can be used for deception, has environmental effects and many people are worried about it. What do we do? First, don't be Luddites either, we cannot reject advancement in technology. The Luddites were a group of workers during the Industrial Revolution that burned down machines because they did not want to be replaced by machines. We cannot be naive either, we have to look at AI wisely - looking at the negatives also. We are called to be wise and learn, we have to use it well. AI can be used well or misused. Use it as an assistant, not a replacement, never credit a work to you when AI made it, beware of fake news, and protect your information. Focus on unique human things like creativity, critical thinking, etc,
