Weekly Sunday Sermon - God gave the Promised Land to His People
Hello!
Today the theme I listened to was "God gave the Promised Land to His People", deriving from Joshua, specifically 1-10, the more popular segment of the book. First, let's review through the Old Testament.
Genesis is about the creation, and there are four important events and four important people. There is the Creation (event), the Fall (event), the Flood (event), and the Tower of Babel (event), and then Abraham (person), Isaac (person), Jacob (person), and Joseph (person). In Exodus, God fulfilled hus promise to Abraham and redeemed the Israelite people. Important events there include God Calling Moses, God redeemed His People through the Passover and the parting of the Sea, and God gave them the Law (ten commandments) at Mt Sinai and provided for them even when they were grumbling. Leviticus is all about living holy to God, there was a special person (priest), special day (Sabbath), special place (Tabernacle), and special means (sacrifice to God). Numbers is about wilderness wanderings, and Deuteronomy is a reminder;renewal of the covenant. In the end of Deuteronomy, Moses died after overlooking from Mount Nebo the entire land God promised, though God forbade him to enter. the Israelite people needed a new ruler adn God spoke to Joshua, one of the twelve spies God sent to survey the land, who was obedient. Joshua was fearful, but God told him not to be afraid. This is an important part.
So Joshua agreed and spoek to the people, and the people were obedient. The secodn point is about Rahab. In Joshua 2, Joshua sent forward some spies over to Jericho. This is a relatively well known story, Rahab hid them in their house. Why did she do that? She knew about all the miracles and had faith that God would destroy Jericho, and so she was saved later.
There are three important miracles during Joshua's early leadership, (1) crossing the Jordan and setting up memorial stones (we must remember what God has done), (2) destroying the Jericho walls, and (3) war at Gilgal against the Gibeonites. After destroying Jericho, it was commanded by God to take only the gold, silver, bronze and iron out of Jericho and keep it in the Lord's treasury, but someone called Achan disobeyed, he took some for himself. Nobody knew.
Joshua then sent some spies to Ai. The spies underestimated the city's strenvth and they sent a smaller army of 3000 to take Ai. Because of Achan's sin, they were defeated and were ashamed. Joshua put to trial every perosn in the large Israelite populationa nd Achan was found with stealing some articles, so he was put to death. Due to Achan's sin, everyone suffered.
