Weekly Sunday Sermon - God was with Joseph
Hello! The lesson they taught revolves around and covers Genesis chapters 37 until 41 - about the former half of the story and struggles of Joseph, but not yet all of his story - only until the Cupbearer and Baker scene.
Joseph's life was a rollercoaster of ups and downs. There were constant horrible betrayals, accusations, and inconveniences for him, but also many promotions and upgrades in his position. How could he have so much success for the amount of sheer troubles that he faced?
1. God was with Joseph.
All throughout the Latter section of Genesis, you can see that it states that God was with Joseph. God helped and assisted him throughout the ups and downs he faced, throughout the good times (becoming chief over Potiphar's household, becoming leader of the prison) and the dark times (slavery, thrown into prison, being forgotten by cupbearer). And God is with us. When God is with us, we will succeed and even others can see we are effective. In Joseph's story, we read that Potiphar sees the value of Joseph as a slave and the prison warden as a leader.
2. Joseph Resisted Temptation
However, Joseph also resisted temptation and evil's tests when confronted by it. We see when Potiphar's wife tempts him to do ungodly activities, he rejects and flees, saying he cannot do such wickedness. We have to pray to God to have such a temptation-resisting mentality.
3. Amidst our Own Troubles, We must Forgive and Care for Others.
Joseph was in prison as the leader of the prison when he found two imprisoned high ranking people: the Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker - in a sorrowful condition. Joseph, although possessing of his own personal troubles, problems, and crises, cared to ask them. He interpreted their dreams. The cupbearer, when freed, did not remember Joseph. We must forgive people who are like the cupbearer.
Christocentrical References from Joseph to Jesus
Joseph and Jesus share a lot in common in their lives, like many other people in the Old Testament. Firstly, both were betrayed and sold for a sum of money. Secondly, when Jesus was captured to be crucified, his disciples fled, and so did the cupbearer forget about Joseph. Lastly, both were falsely accused. There are many references to Christ throughout the Old Testament.
