Weekly Devotion - 5 October

Hello! Today's topic is revolving around Matthew 5:3-10.

These seven verses are known as the Beatitudes, the first part of the famous Sermon of the Mount, one of Jesus' sermons which has many wise teachings inside. The Beatitudes list down several traits and personalities we should strive to have.

Verse 3

The first verse of the beatitudes says that the "poor in spirit" will be blessed. Poor in spirit means that we know that we cannot do anything good ourselves. Only thru God and His assistance we can do good. Poor in spirit also means humble.

Verse 4

This verse tells us "those who mourn" will be comforted. Mourning is basically being sad over something. If we are in a state of mourning, have hope.

Verse 5

This verse tells us the "meek" will be blessed. Meekness is a condition of a person that submits to God rather than going our own way. God is much smarter and knowing, so submit to Him. Meekness is also humility and gentleness.

Verse 6

Here, it tells us "those who seek righteousness" will be blessed. So seek righteousness and wisdom, as they are valuable.

Verse 7

The merciful will be granted mercy. Be merciful, not vengeful, and kind, not destructive.

Verse 8,9,10

The blameless, pure in heart, and not-as-sinful will be blessed greatly. Verse 9 tells us peacemakers are children of God and those who are persecuted for their fsith our righteousness too will be blessed.

Reflection Question: What trait are you most lacking?
