Weekly Sunday Sermon - Review of Hebrews to Revelation
Hello! Today's Sunday School is the third last for the New Testament terms and this third last sunday is about reviewing from the Book of Hebrews to Revelation (that is, the genres of General Letters and Prophecy). Below is a list of the books between Hebrews and Revelation and their topic, and after that the combined purpose.
Hebrews
Hebrews was a thirteen chapter book of unknown author. It was sent to the Jews and is about "Who is Jesus?". It elaborates that Jesus is above angels and people, He is our High Priest and Prophet.
James
James is a five chapter book written by James brother of Jesus. It is about wisdom and key points include loving others, faith and works, etc.
1 Peter
1 Peter is a five chapter book about perseverance despite hardships and persecution and that you will be saved if you are faithful and fear the Lord, so persevere.
2 Peter
2 Peter is a three chapter book about God's transformation of man and spiritual maturity with the Word of God to combat false teaching.
1 John
1 John is a five chapter book about false teaching, salvation, and forgiveness. He tells us to avoid false teaching, how we know we will be saved, and that God is forgiving.
2 John
2 John is mostly a warning to a church encouraging them to protect our church and enviromenr from false teaching, and to reject false teachers. False teacher's words contradict with Jesus'.
3 John
3 John is a one chapter book encouraging people to be kind and hospitable, especially missionaries and church leaders. It was sent to a man named Gaius.
Jude
Jude is a one chapter letter about corrupt teachers and that they will be punished like the rebels of the Old Testament.
Revelation
Revelation is a twenty two chapter book written by the Apostle John talking about Jesus' second coming and judgement of the wicked.
Overall Topic
There are a few patterns in the General Letters. They usually confront a challebge for the church, which is usually either Persecution or False Teaching. For example, in Jude, 2 John, 1 John, and 2 Peter, they all have some confrontation against the problem of false teachers - those who lead others astray from Christ, and in 1 Peter and James it encourages us to persevere amidst persecution.
The General Letters also is about what we, as Christians, should do. The first point is to trust and obey God, the second is to follow and have faith in his Word, and the third is to help others and share the Gospel to others.
